When to Use «Ser»

Use ser for permanent or essential characteristics:

  • Soy estudiante. (I am a student.)
  • Ella es mexicana. (She is Mexican.)

🔹 Descriptions & Characteristics (permanent)

  • El cielo es azul. (The sky is blue.)
  • Mi casa es grande. (My house is big.)

🔹 Professions & Relationships

  • Él es profesor. (He is a teacher.)
  • Ana es mi hermana. (Ana is my sister.)

🔹 Time & Dates

  • Hoy es lunes. (Today is Monday.)
  • Son las cinco. (It’s five o’clock.)

🔹 Origin & Possession (with «de»)

  • El coche es de Juan. (The car is Juan’s.)
  • Soy de España. (I am from Spain.)

🔹 Events (time & location)

  • La fiesta es en mi casa. (The party is at my house.)

When to Use «Estar»

Use estar for temporary states, emotions, or locations:

🔹 Location (except for events)

  • El libro está en la mesa. (The book is on the table.)
  • Madrid está en España. (Madrid is in Spain.)

🔹 Emotions & Conditions (temporary states)

  • Estoy feliz. (I am happy.)
  • ¿Estás cansado? (Are you tired?)

🔹 Actions in Progress (Present Continuous: estar + -ing)

  • Estoy estudiando español. (I am studying Spanish.)
  • Ellos están comiendo. (They are eating.)
