In Spanish, there are two verbs that mean «to be»: ser and estar. They are not interchangeable, and each has specific uses.

When to Use «Ser»
Use ser for permanent or essential characteristics:

- Soy estudiante. (I am a student.)
- Ella es mexicana. (She is Mexican.)
🔹 Descriptions & Characteristics (permanent)
- El cielo es azul. (The sky is blue.)
- Mi casa es grande. (My house is big.)
🔹 Professions & Relationships
- Él es profesor. (He is a teacher.)
- Ana es mi hermana. (Ana is my sister.)
🔹 Time & Dates
- Hoy es lunes. (Today is Monday.)
- Son las cinco. (It’s five o’clock.)
🔹 Origin & Possession (with «de»)
- El coche es de Juan. (The car is Juan’s.)
- Soy de España. (I am from Spain.)
🔹 Events (time & location)
- La fiesta es en mi casa. (The party is at my house.)

Use estar for temporary states, emotions, or locations:

- El libro está en la mesa. (The book is on the table.)
- Madrid está en España. (Madrid is in Spain.)
🔹 Emotions & Conditions (temporary states)
- Estoy feliz. (I am happy.)
- ¿Estás cansado? (Are you tired?)
🔹 Actions in Progress (Present Continuous: estar + -ing)
- Estoy estudiando español. (I am studying Spanish.)
- Ellos están comiendo. (They are eating.)

A simple way to remember the difference is:

Common Mistakes
❌ Soy cansado. → ✅ Estoy cansado. (I am tired.)
❌ La fiesta está en mi casa. → ✅ La fiesta es en mi casa. (The party is at my house.)
❌ Mi hermano está alto. → ✅ Mi hermano es alto. (My brother is tall.)
